Diary:
Day 1 Tuesday 2nd October:
We started to record the close up shots of our artist for the thirty seconds we have decided to reconstruct. We managed to record the shots successfully and we now need to create the setting and the other members of the cast walking within the shots.

Day 2 Wednesday 3rd October:
We recorded the walking shots within the thirty seconds of the reconstruction, however this hasnt been as successful as we haven't got all of our team together. We have kept the recordings to use as an example of how we would like these shots to look like. We also need to think of clothing and also the props needed to create a realistic reconstruction of the video.

Day 3 Thursdsay 4th October:
We sorted out some of the costumes. We got the artists clothes sorted -a tank top and black jacket. We recorded the close ups of the artist when he is on his mobile and over the shoulder shot in the mirror.

Day 4 Friday 5th October:
We managed to film the last of all the footage we need to recreate the first 30 seconds. Now we just need to do the editing!

My Audience:

Audience Feedback:

The results of my audience feedback shows that mostly females answered my questions on music videos however there were still males that were kind enough to answer them as well...

This pie chart shows that the majority of the audince are students aged between the ages of 16 and 19

Most people that I asked live in the East Riding but some also live in hull, this makes results more generaliseable because people that I asked are not all from the same area.

Because most people I asked were students which is the chosen audience for my music video this means that I will be able to consider the feedback and use it to my advantage when making my music video...

As you can see here the most popular choices for the genre of music is pop, R&B and then synthpop -this makes me feel confident with the song choice I have chosen because it is one of the most liked out of all the genres

Seeing this also makes me confident but with my choice of the style of my music video. Everyone that I asked said they like narrative music videos because there is more to them which makes them more interesting to watch. The audience feedback shows that they also like performance videos as well so I may put some performance in too.

Audience Interview Outakes:

Audience Interviews:

Questions:

1. When listening to the lyrics, what would you expect to see in the music video?

2. From listening to the lyrics what location would you expect the video to be set in?

3. What is your opinion on narrative music videos?

4. What is your opinion on synth-pop/pop music?

5. What age group would you expect the audience to be for this song and music video?

Interview Number 1: Grace Moxon

After talking to Grace I liked the idea of some of my music video being set in the home. Not having the arguments or all of the music video there, just have flashbacks and memories be set there because I think that it will show the relationship the artist and his girlfriend had was serious because they lived together.

Interview Number 2: Alx Murtur-Southerington

Again Alx said about the fact it could be set in the home and also came up with the idea of telling the story of the break up, I like the idea of him breaking up with her however in the video he will only be breaking up with her because he has to and she has driven him to it.

Interview Number 3: Wesley Foster

Wesley's feedback was helpful because before interviewing I had not thought about other techniques, for example the stop motion. He also said about it being set in the

Key Audience Terms:

Quantitative Data:

This can be aquired by methods focusing on numbers and frequances rather than meaning and experience. The information provided is usually easy to analyse statistically and failry reliable. An example of this data would be experiments and questionaires.

Qualitative Data:

This is concerned with describing a meaning rather than statistics. They provide a more in depth description and involve an indepth description on that specific topic. Qualitative data is not as reliable as Quantitative although more valid.

Demographic Data:

This involves the characteristics of the human population which can be used in government, marketing or opinon research. This datas is measured by socio-economic statistics.

Pshchographic Data:

This is what determines the attitudes and tastes of a perticular segment of the population. It defines how the audience feels, this type of data is different to Demographic Data as it isnt quantifiable with numbers.

Story Board of Existing Music Video:

Analyisis of an Existing Music Video (Labrinth-Treatment):

Cinamatography:
There are lots of close ups and medium close ups of the artist which allows the audience to see him clearly. Mid shot is the shot that is used most throughout the video, mainly with the artist when he is singing into the microphone, to the camera, into the mirror etc. and also when recording the females that are featuring in the video.
At the beginning of the music video it starts off as a long shot and the camera slowly zooms in moving forward towards the artist, ending up as a mid shot of the artist. The next time a long shot is used is when the artist and his band are performing the song in what looks like an arena/warehouse.

Mise En Scene:
In the arena/warehouse there are instruments and lights on the artist and his band which shows that they are putting on a performance for the audience. At the beginning when Labrinth is sat on his own in a dark room that is full of stuff he is on his mobile which shows that he might be looking to see if the girl that has left him insane has text him.
One if his outfits is a black shirt with a cross necklace, the way I interpret this is that he is praying for someone to help him or has turned to god for help, everything he wears is very dark which could represent he is feeling down and in a dark place.

Editing:
All shots in the music video are cuts so that it flows and has a fast pace.
The effect that has been added in when editing is slow motion and it is used throughout the whole music video, not only that it has also been changed to balck and white.

Sound:
Throughout the whole music the sound is synchronus because you can see Labrinth singing throughout the whole of it. There are no sound effects used, only the original record that Labrinth produced.

Codes and Conventions of the Music Video for 'Labrinth-Treatmeant':

There are a lot of close ups, even extreme close ups of Labrinth's features, guitar strings and other instruments because thats what the audience to see. A crane shots are has been used when they are performing in the video, where the camera is hovering over the stage. Then there are pans and tilt shots when moving in between  the different performers in the music video. As well as this there are tracking and long shots to see the location as well as extreme long shots and many more.

With  the editing there are many different techniques that can be used. This music video features jump cutting and the footage has been edited to match the music. Another technique that they may have been used when editing that the lighting has been made darker and made black and white.

The last part of the technical half of the codes and conventions, there is sound; whether it is diegetic or non-diegetic and sometimes there may be a change in the level of sound too, for example in a music video where there is an explosion added in. For my music video I may add in the sound of an electric shock when the artist is having treatment so that it has more of an effect on the audience when they watch it and feel as if they are actually there, which will make them more engrossed in the video.
The symbolic part of the codes and conventions consists of what meaning is created beyond what is obvious to see. A good example would be seeing specific facial expressions of the artist so we can see their emotion and know how they are feeling. This yet again helps you understand the song that little bit more. The mise-en-scene would also be included in this because whatever is in the shot of the music video you see is meant to be there, which therefore makes everything symbolic.

The mise-en-scene can vary greatly depending on the genre of music and the type of music video, it depends on what are used, the costumes (if the music video is set in a different time e.g. the 90s then the costume would have to be of the style of that year) and location of where the music video is set (house, dance studio, street etc.) a good example to explain all of these would be a love song and the artist is laying on their bed (location: set in their bedroom) and in the background of the shot you can see a photo frame with the artist and who they were seeing on their bed side table (mise-en-scene), this allows the audience to know who the artist is singing about and that they meant a lot to them. It is highlighted through using the mise-en scene because they have a picture that they would see every morning when they woke up and every night before they went to sleep.

The reason as to why we have codes and conventions is because codes and conventions are like a firm set of rules. They allow the audience to become familiar with a certain genre as they become accustomed to seeing certain things and it ensures that a certain text works well and fits into its genre, because of this they can slowly adapt however shouldn’t be challenged on too great a level.

Codes and Conventions of a Music Video:

The codes and conventions are a way of constructing meaning in media texts.

There are two separate categories to this which is technical and symbolic. The technical part of the codes and conventions is to do with how the equipment and technology are used to construct meaning within the media text, for example with the camera; the angle of the shot – if the shot is filmed from a high angle and the camera is looking down on the artist, it is to make them look inferior. There is a variety of shots depending on the style, in music videos there are a lot of close ups, even extreme close ups of lips, guitar strings and other things that they want the audience to see. Crane shots are used quite frequently where the camera is hovering over stage, then there are low angles as well as high, pans and tilt shots when moving in between different performers, tracking and long shots to see the location as well as extreme long shots and many more.

With editing there are many different techniques used in music videos. Music videos usually feature jump cutting and the footage is usually edited to match the music. Sometimes they also add in splits-screens or CGI. A technique that I will use when editing my footage will be to make the lighting darker so that it creates the effect of not being in a nice place and recreate the feel of a mental asylum. I will have to do this because to film it has to be well lit, however thanks to the effects I can add in when editing my music video will still have the look I want it to have.

Influential Media Texts:

The film 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest':

I am wanting to recreate the look of the artist having electric shock therapy however the machine will be more modern. The shot will be a CU/MCU and will show the artist having his electric shock therapy (acting) while around him Doctors in white labatory coats will be stood looking down on him.

Greenday - Basket Case Music Video:

Bjork - Violently Happy Music Video:

The idea of having a straight jacket came from watching this music video, as did the idea of having the artist alone in a room, however the area where the artist will be sat will be a lot bigger and in a darker setting as appose to bright because I think that if it was in a brighter setting then it seems happier and more light hearted, where as I want it to look serious and dark.

Ideas for my Music Video using the lyrics:

Mood Board:

When listening to the song these things (above) are what I think about, because of this I am hoping to include this in my narrative music video. The concern is that some people may find footage disturbing, to avoid this I will record footage and ask a range of people of different ages from the public whether they find it disturbing or distressing. The footage I film will be tactfully done and not as violent as it was when the treatments were being carried out in the 1900's. The artist will act out being mental and will pretend to be recieving the treatment but with the way it will be filmed it will not shock the audience when they see it.

This music video will tell the story of why he is now mental and who made him that way. As well as seeing the artist recieving the treatment there will also be shots of the girl that broke his heart and made him 'insane'.

Codes and Conventions of Lyrics:

From listening to these lyrics I would expect and want to see a music video that told a story so that as well as hearing about what happened, I could also see it. After researching into all of the lyrics and finding the correct meanings, I now understand more about the song and realise in more detail as to how the artist is feeling because of his ‘baby’.

In the video I would expect to see the artist going ‘insane’ for example; in an ‘asylum’ or in a strait jacket. I would expect to see the girl that has made him that way, either see her visiting him in the asylum, or a flashback to the memories they shared. Another thing I would expect to see is how she has made him like that; what she did, whether she left him, cheated on him etc. –the actions she did to make him be so miserable and ‘need treatment’.

I would want the music video to be a narrative music video rather than performance because you could tell a great and gripping story that grabs the audience’s attention as well as having close ups to see the artist so the audience are able to distinguish the performer and know who sings the song.

The lyrics also help get an idea as to what the lighting in the video will be like and also on the image for the front cover. This is because when listening to the lyrics and knowing what they mean it sounds like the artist would be in quite a dark place. I will therefore take this into account when taking the photo for the album front cover; which will be in dim/dark lighting so the cover relates to the song and lyrics as well as the music video.

The band/artist features in the narrative but doesn't perform.

For Example: Bastille - Pompie

Animation:

This features digitally (flash)/stop frame animations.

For Example: Peter Kay - Hey Jude

About the Atrist:

Mood Board:

Labrinth, who's real name is Timothy McKenzie, was born 21 March 1989(23), is an English singer-songwriter and record producer. McKenzie is signed to Simon Cowell's label Syco, becoming the first non-talent show signing in six years.

He made his debut appearance on the UK Singles Chart in March 2010, when his collaboration with British rapper Tinie Tempah "Pass Out" which reached number one.

His first solo single was "Let the Sun Shine" which was released in September 2010, reaching number three in the charts. His debut album Electronic Earth was released on 2 April 2012, having been preceded by the singles "Earthquake" featuring Tinie Tempah and "Last Time" and also the song I have chosen for my music video, "Treatment".

Not only does Labrinth work alongside Tinie Tempah but also with artists such as Professor Green for the track "Oh My God" on the album Alive til I'm Dead, Ola Svensson for the track "Let It Hit You" on her album Ola and Loick Essien for "Love Drunk" for the album Identity.

Labrinth is working on new songs for a follow up album and said there may be elements of rock music. He said "I’m definitely going to make rock songs, without a doubt. A lot of the records on my album had rock elements, but I wouldn’t say they were rock. I haven’t got into the live room, but on the next album that’s definitely going to happen."

Labrinth's music videos are very rarely narrative, they are mainly peformance music videos where you can see the artist. This is another reason as to why I would like to make my music video to his song a narrative because other than one of his songs it has not really been done. The single where he has decided to have a narrative music video is 'Last Time' where it tells the story of a young boy discovering a new world and makes an alien friend:

Here are examples of his music videos where they are just performance:

Song: Treatment

Artist: Labrinth

Genre: Synthpop

Lyrics:

(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
[Verse 1]
Cowgirl, cowgirl why'd you leave me high and dry
You had a heart but then you put a hole in mine
Listen, I wanna break down
You don't understand the damage you've done now
Let me remind you that I had a heart and you came inside
Turned the whole place upside
[Chorus]
Dow'own; out of my mind
Rocking chair, mental asylum
Everyone dressed in white
I really think I lost it this time
Yeahy yeah, I wanna break down
You don't understand the damage you've done now
Let me remind you that boys don't cry
Isn't it clear that I need treatment
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
(hoh baby, hoh-hoh baby)
[Verse 2]
All day, all night, see I could go from dusk till dawn
Thinking about how you left me crushed and torn
I wanna break down
You don't understand the damage you've done now (Come on)
Let me remind you that I had a heart and you came inside
Turned the whole place upside
[Chorus]
Dow'own; out of my mind
Rocking chair, mental asylum
Everyone dressed in white
I really think I lost it this time
Yeahy yeah, I wanna break down
You don't understand the damage you've done now
Let me remind you that boys don't cry
Isn't it clear that I need treatment
Cuz I'm insane in the membrane,
so crazy you made me yeah
Insane in the membrane,
look what you created
Look what you did, hoooooh hoooooh
*Girl Singing*
Look what you did, my baby oh no no
Isn't it clear that I,
Need Treatment
Treatment
[Ending Chorus]
out of my mind
Rocking chair, mental asylum
Everyone dressed in white
I really think I lost it this time
Yeahy yeah, I wanna break down
You don't understand the damage you've done now
Let me remind you that boys don't cry
Isn't it clear that I need treatment
